　　改革开放以来，社会上关注领事工作的人越来越多，领事保护已经成为社会各界议论的热门话题。那么，领事一词到底有什么含义？对此，人们众说纷纭。笔者在多年的领事工作实践中，常常被人问及这个问题，也经常带着这个问题去请教别人，但都没有找到一个满意的答案，因此，笔者觉得非常有必要对领事一词的来历及含义进行一番探究。

So what does the word consul really mean? Opinions vary. In my years of practice in consular work, I have often been asked this question and consulted others with this question, but have not found a satisfactory answer. Therefore, I think it is very necessary to explore the origin and meaning of the word "consul".
