The South China Sea is our common home. It serves the common interests of all parties to maintain peace and stability and freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea. As the largest trader of goods, more than 60 percent of China's trade in goods passes through the South China Sea.
Peace and stability in the South China Sea bears on China's vital interests. Thanks to the joint efforts of China and ASEAN countries, the overall situation in the South China Sea has remained stable, and there has never been a problem with the freedom of navigation and overflight. China and ASEAN countries are committed to peaceful settlement of disputes, managing differences and promoting common development through consultation and negotiation between countries directly concerned, thus making positive contributions to regional peace and stability.
China is committed to the path of peaceful development. As a state party to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), China has always worked with ASEAN countries to properly handle the South China Sea issue on the basis of mutual respect in accordance with international law including UNCLOS and in light of the actual situation in the region. In this spirit and principle, we successfully signed the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC), which is being fully and effectively implemented.
It is in this spirit and principle that we are actively advancing consultations on a Code of Conduct in the South China Sea and agree to conclude at an early date a CODE of Conduct that is effective, substantive and consistent with international law, including unCLOS
